PROCESS:
Step 1: Write a persuasive letter
You need to write a persuasive letter to NASA telling them why your school deserves to be picked to go to Mars. You need to support your argument with details. Use your creative writing skills to persuade NASA to pick your school!! Remember to use good grammar and spelling! If working in groups, only one letter needs to be turned in.
Step 2: Research Simple Machines
Working with your partner, you will go to tooter4kids to research simple machines and their functions. Read all of the information carefully and fill out worksheet 1. Click on the introduction and click the blue arrows at the bottom of the page to go through all sections until you get to the Links section. Scroll down to the 10th link, titled 'Simple Machines' and click on it. Read the information about the 6 simple machines, DO NOT CLICK ON THE EXTRA INFORMATION LINK!!
STEP 3: Draw and label simple machines
Each individual student will get a piece of construction paper and draw a picture for each of the 6 simple machines. Each drawing needs to be labeled with the name of the machine, a description of the work that the machine does, and how it makes work easier.
STEP 4: Pick or design 3 tools to help you survive on Mars.
You will work with your partner to either pick 3 simple machines or design your own 3 machines that will help your class to survive on Mars. Remember that there are not any buildings there, you will need to build everything that you need. Think about things that you need, such as a home, school, bed and furniture. Will you need desks? You and your partner need to draw a picture of your simple machines and write a 4 sentence paragraph describing each tool and what it will be used for. You and your partner will present your machines to the class and read your paragraphs detailing their use. ( If working in groups, only one paper and drawing needs to be turned in. )
